Follow These Tips for Your Invisalign Treatment

Caring for Invisalign is much easier than traditional braces, but there are still some important guidelines to follow.

Guidelines for Wearing Invisalign

  • In order for Invisalign to work, your trays have to be worn AT LEAST 22 hours per day.
  • Your aligners should only be removed when you are eating, drinking anything other than cool water, or brushing your teeth
  • Chewies should be used three to five times a day for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Guidelines for Caring for Invisalign

  • Clean your aligners using cold or room temperature and soapy water with a designated toothbrush; brush the inside and outside of the tray.
  • NEVER use hot water because it will distort your aligners.
  • Do not use toothpaste or mouthwash to brush aligners. These products are too abrasive and will damage your aligners.

Tracking

  • The pictures below show you examples of good and bad tracking. Once you are ready to advance to the next set of aligners, you should check your tracking. If you see a bubble (like circled in the picture below) between your teeth and the aligner(s), continue with the current set of aligners for 2-3 more days and use chewies on the problem area(s).
  • Once you’ve switched to the next set, you should save the previous set of aligners just in case anything happens to the current set. This way, you will have the previous set of aligners to fall back on. Keep your previous aligners until you are 3-4 trays ahead.
  • If you misplace your current set of aligners, give us a call and we will determine if you can switch aligners or if we need to re-order the set (*there is a fee for replacement).

Storing Your Trays

  • Always store your aligners in a retainer case.
  • Never throw them in a purse or pocket since they’re fragile and could break.
  • Don’t wrap your trays in a napkin - this is the easiest way for them to get thrown away by mistake.
